Here are some golden words of advice from the 2010 Blue Ribbon Panel judges to help you win:

  • Avoid industry-specific jargon and terms. Write your work plan narrative so it can be understood by someone outside your field or industry.
  • Make sure you start with SMART objectives (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound). Without them your work plan won't demonstrate the strategy, impact or value of your communication.
  • Measure the impact of your communication efforts had on changing or reinforcing behaviors or perceptions. In other words, focus on outcomes, not outputs and out-takes.
  • A winning work plan includes quality details that help the judges understand the business need, the strategic solution (what, not how), and the business value/impact of your efforts.
