<image:title>News - AI in Communications - Our challenges and opportunities</image:title>
<image:caption>At the IABC Fusion APAC conference in The Philippines in March, AI was understandably a hot topic. Specifically, the need for communication professionals to be part of shaping its responsible use in organisations. In a short time, AI has become a powerful workplace tool that is becoming increasingly sophisticated. However, for all its time saving benefits AI comes with inherent risks to organisations. From misinformation to data security issues, loss of trust from customers through lack of transparency, and employee misuse, AI has the potential to cause reputational damage to organisations, impacting the bottom line. Organisations need to be implementing governance and policies about its responsible and ethical use, engaging with stakeholders such as Senior Leaders, HR, IT, Legal and Communications. As custodians of organisational reputations and often brands, communication professionals bring a strategic view to the table on how to manage AI as a business opportunity and at the same time, foresee issues and manage them before they become a crisis.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Four New Members Become SCMP Certified - Jacinta Campbell, Media and Stakeholder Engagement Manager, City of Newcastle</image:title>
<image:caption>“I considered the GCCC Certification process an opportunity to test my years of experience against a global standard. It was challenging but really worth the investment in time. I set myself a goal in 2022 to achieve SCMP Certification and felt really proud of myself once I did. Reading and preparing for the SCMP certification actually reignited my passion for the profession. I found myself picking up The IABC Guide for Practical Business Communication in any spare moment I had. The guide together with readings and webinars from IABC’s online resources were valuable reinforcement of delivering to a model of communication excellence and best practice principles.” Alison Evans, Internal Communication and Engagement, Greater Bank “SCMP is more than a set of post-nominals. To maintain the certification requires ongoing commitment to learning, mentoring and best practice. It’s rigorous but that’s an important marker of credibility and gives businesses and senior leaders confidence they’re working with contemporary professionals who are well practiced in providing strategic communication advice. “Right now, businesses are facing unique challenges, especially when it comes to transformation and the employee experience, so there’s significant demand for strategic communication which helps deliver outcomes that align with business objectives.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Four New Members Become SCMP Certified - Chris Saxby, Brand, Marketing & Communications Business Partner - Clients & Markets, Aurecon</image:title>
<image:caption>“It was a personal achievement I wanted to accomplish. I have been a member of IABC's International Foundation Grant Selection TaskForce for the past three years and am the Current Chair and wanted to ensure that I was leading by example by being certified. “I really enjoyed the study groups and meeting online to discuss the reading material. It makes you think about best practice as it applies to your day-to-day role. After receiving my SCMP certification, I was relieved but also very grateful to be part of a community that celebrates ongoing professional development.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Four New Members Become SCMP Certified - Karen Godfrey, Internal Communications Manager, BOC South Pacific</image:title>
<image:caption>“Thanks to all the SCMP professionals who have shared their experience about why this certifications matters. You inspired me to take the plunge. You said it was tough but rightly so. I have been in the profession for 15 years without any Communication qualifications, so I needed to know I had the skills and experience to operate at a strategic level, and meet global ethical standards. I also learnt that I have some work to do – so plenty of questions for my comms people coming up. “I encourage experienced communicators to take the challenge – happy to support you through it.”</image:caption>

The energy and interaction in the virtual environment was infectious. Thank you all for openly sharing your invaluable stories and insights. We heard about why internal communications is more important than ever to inform a workforce, how a NFP pivoted their messaging and programs during COVID-19 to stay relevant and top of mind and how purpose and business strategy was aligned with social issues. A charity donation instead of speaker gifts was made to the charities of their choosing.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - #UnityInCommunity - Reflect, rest and reset</image:title>
<image:caption>6 months through our 2020 tenure as IABC board members, where COVID-19 turned our worlds upside down, we felt it was an opportune moment to take the time to reflect, rest and reset before we delivered our second 6 months on behalf of our IABC community. We celebrated an incredible 6 months 62% increase in event bookings from the same period last year. Between 80-100% of participants rated the early 2020 events as very good/excellent value and the content as very/extremely valuable. Members have seen exceptional value for money. 16% increase in membership to over 160 from the start of the year 7 NSW Gold Quill winners $350 donated to speaker charities And then after a reflect, rest and reset linked to our commitments assured you of the actions we would stop, start and continue. <image:title>News - #UnityInCommunity - Net promoter score</image:title>
<image:caption>The events survey gave us the chance to see how we were tracking on our Net promoter score. When the board and I inherited the membership our experience survey showed us that we had work to do to build the advocacy and positive sentiment the community felt towards IABC NSW. I’m pleased to say that over the last year we’ve increased our NPS by 40 percentage points. We had set a target to increase by 10 percentage points so we are delighted that the membership feels so passionately about the community and we can build on this momentum together. We valued hearing things like ‘I think IABC is doing a great job in difficult circumstances’, ‘This is the most impressive member organisation I have ever been involved with’ but we appreciate we aren’t getting it right all the time. There was lots of great feedback coming from the survey in regards to: our range of speakers; consultants versus comms professionals. About the balance people are looking between virtual and face to face (50/50 split) when we get back to in person events. About ensuring networking is still incorporated into virtual events. Ensuring we brief speakers to ensure they appreciate the audience level and sophistication to always get the right tone.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - #UnityInCommunity - Events 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>We put forward a range of speaker ideas and topics and based on your votes the leadership, influence, connection and digital events were clear highlights you want to see in 2021. Our roundtable event is always one of our highlights of the year so we are committed to that. The opportunity to build professional and communication credibility, your earning potential and gain a competitive advantage is key to IABC and so our Gold Quill advocacy and showcase plus GCCC certification is paramount (we are of course looking forward to hosting our first one this year). We sadly had to postpone our crisis event at the start of the year but with an exciting reframing of the event and a virtual offering we are pleased that, that event will also feature. Throughout member month and before the end of the year we will be showcasing your 2021 events schedule. We are working hard on ensuring feedback is actioned and that final speakers/topics are locked in with dates and times so you can plan your IABC NSW experience throughout 2021.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Would you fly blind? - Empowerment is critical. To excel at their craft these guys need access. All forums open to them to be in attendance when required. They need to be in the essence of what is going on and need to be able to open the door to any discussion if the situation requires it. This can require air cover at times. It also comes most naturally when the team is highly regarded and positioned as a valuable resource to aid business success.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Would you fly blind? - These opportunities were also born out of the push and pull I have identified. Push and pull needs to be a hallmark of the relationship you have with this team to get the most powerful outcomes. This is a type of creative tension where each side of the equation needs to be able to challenge to push beyond comfort zones. Sometimes this is the executive pushing to get the team to work harder on managing the risks to match the vision for what they want to communicate. Equally, it can be the comms team pushing the executive to be bolder. Obviously this is only a healthy dynamic if the reverse, the pull, can be used to the same effect.</image:title>
