Achieving global a communications standard

Recently, Lucy Hose, IABC Board Member, took the plunge and went back to the books!

Revisiting the Foundations: My Journey to SCMP® Certification

In May 2025, I embarked on a new professional development opportunity. After saying “never again” after having successfully completed two post-graduate communications and marketing diplomas, I got the learning itch again last year. Being an IABC Board member for the second year, I felt like it was time to put my money where my mouth was and commit to the Strategic Communication Management Professional (SCMP®) certification.

What is the SCMP?

The SCMP® certification, developed by the Global Communication Certification Council (GCCC®) and supported by the IABC, is a globally recognised credential for senior-level communicators. It validates expertise in strategic communication planning, ethics, crisis management, and leadership. It demonstrates your ability as a communicator to align communication strategies with organisational goals.

My takeouts -

It was a great experience to learn and revisit the latest global communications standards

Studying for the certification was more than just a professional development exercise for me. I wanted to deep dive into the evolving standards that shape our global communications landscape. The process helped me reconnect with the core principles of strategic communication and reflect on how they apply in today’s dynamic environments. There is a wealth of information and content that I accessed as part of the course, which helped reignite my curiosity and enthusiasm for our profession.

Ethics: The heart of strategic communication

One of the most enriching parts of the certification was revisiting the ethics framework. In a world where trust is currency, ethical communication is not optional; it’s essential. The SCMP® program reinforced the importance of transparency, integrity, and accountability in every message we craft. It reminded me that ethical decision-making is the foundation of effective leadership and long-term reputation management and as communicators we have a duty to advise our leaders on what approach they should take.

Crisis communication: A skill for our times

The crisis communication element of the SCMP ® resonated deeply with me. In a time marked by volatility, uncertainty, and rapid change, the ability to respond strategically and empathetically during a crisis is a must-have skill. The IABC offers a clear framework for crisis comms and provides practical tools and insights for managing high-stakes situations, reinforcing the value of preparedness, clarity, and stakeholder engagement.

So why does the SCMP® matter?

Achieving the certification has already started to influence how I approach my work. Here are a few key benefits I’ve experienced:

  • Global recognition: It’s a credential that signals strategic expertise and ethical leadership in communication.

  • Professional confidence: The rigorous study and exam process validated my skills and gave me fresh perspectives. Plus helped combat my imposter syndrome!

  • Network and community: Being part of the IABC community connects me with like-minded professionals around the world, and the IABC study group we co-ran with our APAC colleagues this year really helped.

  • Strategic mindset: The certification sharpened my ability to align communication strategies with business goals.

Final Thoughts

If you're a communications professional looking to elevate your strategic impact, I highly recommend exploring the certification. It’s not just a qualification; it’s a journey of growth, reflection, and renewed purpose.

And – of our study group members, 7 have passed with flying colours so far and I’m so proud we did it together!
